13th February 2013
The Traffic section of Dublin City Council recently installed souble yellow lines on a section of Arnott St. They did so without consultation with local residents. It does seem that one local councillor was involved in the decision, but the other councillors were not consulted.
Cllr. Kieran Binchy was contacted by residents after the double yellow lines had been installed. He was informed that as well as the obvious lack of available parking caused by the loss of on-street parking spaces, there is a serious safety issue here. This area of Portobello is increasingly being used as a rat-run, and the widening of available space along here is encouraging cars to speed up dangerously.
Cllr. Binchy therefore submitted a motion to the February meeting of the South East Area Committee of Dublin City Council calling on the area manager to account for the decision to install the double yellow lines, and to reverse the decision. The motion got the full support of the other Councillors, and the reply of the manager was completely inadequate. Cllr. Binchy has therefore called on the manager to organise a meeting with residents and the traffic section to find a solution. He will continue to work with residents to seek a satisfactory solution on this issue.
