Cllr. Kieran Binchy was delighted to welcome the new wayfinding signs throughout the docklands area. They should work to make the area more attractive and accessible to tourists and Dubliners alike, and thereby encourage people to visit and explore this great area of the city.
In recent years, Dublin Docklands has become an important destination for anyone visiting Dublin. The Docklands now boasts a variety of cultural and civic attractions such as the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, The 02 arena, the Convention Centre and Grand Canal Square. The extension of the wayfinding system to Docklands will allow people to build up a mental map of the city, get a real sense of journey times and an understanding that Dublin is a walkable city.
“The Docklands is still relatively new to visitors and the extension there of the citywide wayfinding system is really important to ensure understanding of linkages across Dublin” said Loretta Lambkin of the Dublin Docklands Development Authority.
It will provide consistent and accurate information relating to the points of interest in the Docklands area along with enabling visitors and tourists to plan and undertake their journeys with confidence. This results in making Dublin City more accessible, pleasant to experience so visitors and residents alike can enjoy and partake in its many possibilities for living, working, investing, shopping, socialising and learning.
The existing Docklands scheme is outdated and needed to be improved and modernised in order to integrate with the recently completed Dublin city centre wayfinding scheme. In total the updated system provides for 7 map panels and 28 fingerpost structures.
The delivery of this project has also had added benefit whereby the existing structures which have been replaced will be refurbished and reused by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council to provide for a new wayfinding system in their administrative area.
In addition, there is a new wayfinding app for the City Centre, of particular interest for those with sight loss. https://itunes.apple.com/ie/app/walk-dublin/id576398609?mt=8
