Cllr. Binchy recently met with the St. Kevin’s (Portobello) Community Council and local residents to discuss the application for planning permission for a large museum on Walworth Road and Kingsland Parade in Portobello. While Cllr. Binchy supports the development of the Irish Jewish Museum, the current proposal is too large for the site, and completely unsuitable for a residential conservation area.
He recently raised the matter at the monthly meeting of the South East Area Committee. The debate on the issue at that monthly meeting of the South East Area is available here:
The proposal is available through the Dublin City Council Planning Website – enter the reference number for the Irish Jewish Museum proposal (3096/12 – in the Planning Reference column) and click on “search” below on the left.
The deadline for observations on this proposal is 20th September 2012.
The development consists of the demolition of numbers 3,4,5,6 & 7 Walworth Road and the construction of a 2 storey over basement museum building incorporating café and reinstated synagogue at numbers 3 & 4 Walworth Road. The application involves the reinstatement of the existing 2 storey facades onto Walworth Road and Kingsland Parade and the modification of same to provide for new entrances onto Walworth Road and Kingsland Parade.
